What is a Mexican Lager?

The Mexican Lager style, as the name suggests, originates from Mexico, where abundant and inexpensive maize is widely used by local breweries in the form of flakes to produce these beers. This corn gives Mexican Lagers their characteristic yellow colour, as well as their lightness and freshness.

Popular in the United States and adopted by some craft breweries in Europe, these clear, low-bitter, low-alcohol beers are ideal for casual summer drinking. Often served with a slice of lemon, they have become emblematic thanks to brands like Corona.

Why clear bottles?

Mexican Lagers are often sold in clear bottles, unlike other beers which use tinted bottles to protect the hops from UV rays. Because of their low hop content, Mexican Lagers do not need this protection, which means that clear bottles can be used without altering the taste.
