The Vaudois wine bottle: Tradition and innovation

The idea of a Vaudois wine bottle was born in 1822, the result of an aesthetic consideration and a search for authenticity that would allow the discerning wine lover to immediately recognize the origin of the wine. At the same time, the aim was to enhance the drinking pleasure through an attractive glass shape and colors.
Like the wines themselves, the bottles have an origin and a family. At the beginning of the 19th century, when wine bottles were blown in quantities, also began the urge to create something new.

The history of Vaud wine bottles

In 1822, the canton of Vaud enacted a law that defined various wine bottles mass. Among them, the Pot Vaudois with a capacity of 1.4 liters, the Demi-Pot with 70cl and the small wine bottle Picholette with 35cl.
These wine bottles were produced in a few glass factories until the end of the 19th century. They kept the same bottle shape, dictated on one hand by the manufacturing processes and on the other hand by the constant use, which finally led to a public identification of the “Vaudois wine bottle”. In the 20th century, industrialization and the development of metric measures led to a “redesign”, starting from the liter, the wine bottle marketed today, whose shape varies.
The “pot vaudois” is strictly reserved for Vaudois AOC wines harvested and bottled in the canton of Vaud.
